For many South Africans, the only thing better than watching their favourite sport is getting paid to play or be involved in it. South Africa aims to increase access to sports and recreation, which requires professionals like coaches, trainers, nutritionists, and doctors. A career in sports offers opportunities in sports clubs, federations, academies, gyms, and recreation clubs.
The Sport, Recreation, and Fitness sub-sector covers the operation and management of health and wellbeing centres, fitness centres, spas, and recreational facilities, as well as the management of sporting events and academies. The sub-sector is embracing 4IR technologies like data analytics, wearable devices, and eSports. Key stakeholders include the South African Football Association (SAFA) and the Department of Sport, Arts and Recreation, which support skills development initiatives through a skills levy.
