Gaming & Lotteries

Gaming & Lotteries

Gambling in South Africa was legalised in 1994 by the newly elected democratic government, and since then, it has become a thriving industry offering significant employment opportunities. The Gaming and Lotteries sub-sector, though one of the smaller segments within CATHSSETA, includes horseracing event organisers, racecourses, sports gambling, casinos, and the national lottery. The rise of 4IR technologies like artificial intelligence, blockchain, and virtual reality has transformed the industry, enabling people to gamble from mobile phones and online platforms.

South Africa has 38 licensed casinos, with a growing number of sports betting facilities and bingo lounges across the country. Jobs in this sector include dealers, casino floor supervisors, and slot supervisors, with career opportunities expanding as the industry grows. South African casino staff are also often recruited for international cruise liners. While many roles in casino management don't require higher education, acquiring a management qualification can be beneficial for career advancement. The sub-sector also includes horseracing and horse-breeding, an exciting industry that involves a wide range of professionals, all contributing to events like the Durban July.

CATHSSETA provides funding for bursaries, learnerships, internships and work integrated learning programmes. We also offer career advice.

If you are an employer in the industry, you can contact us on how you can access funding from CATHSSETA for your skills development interventions.
