Conservation

Conservation

When people think of conservation, they often picture tree-hugging, animal-loving activists. While protecting endangered plants and animals is part of it, conservation is much more than that. South Africa is the third most biodiverse country in the world, boasting a wealth of biodiversity and ecological infrastructure, including 53 forest nature reserves, 22 national parks, and 39 marine protected areas.

Conservation is about creating a better, cleaner, and more sustainable world, preserving the planet’s resources for future generations. In this sub-sector, you'll work to protect, manage, and enhance environments like grasslands, woodlands, forests, coastal areas, and rivers. The conservation industry is diverse, involving activities in hunting, wildlife parks, zoological establishments, and botanical gardens. While the sector offers rewarding opportunities for those passionate about nature, it is often marked by job instability, low pay, and long hours.

If you are passionate about conservation and want to make it your career, CATHSSETA can help with funding for bursaries, learnerships, internships, and work-integrated learning programmes, as well as career advice. Employers can also access funding for skills development through CATHSSETA. For more information, please contact your nearest regional office.
