CATHSSETA hosts Heritage Careers Expo: Arts Day

The Culture, Arts, Tourism, Hospitality & Sport Sector Education & Training Authority (CATHSSETA), together with the Department of Higher Education, Science and Innovation (DHET), and partnering SETAs hosted the Heritage Careers Expo: Arts Day 2022 at the University of Mpumalanga, Nelspruit, Mbombela Campus on 26 July 2022.

This is a flagship project of the office of the Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation, made possible by a collaborative partnership between CATHSSETA, Services SETA, FoodBev SETA, MICTSETA, TETA, AgriSETA, W&R SETA, InSTEA and FP&M SETA. The inaugural Heritage Careers Expo was first held in April 2019 at Constitution Hill, Gauteng Province which saw over 1500 learners, TVET and University Students attend the event

Themed “Unlocking the wealth in our heritage”, the 3rd Annual Heritage Career Expo aims to expose young people in the post-schooling education and training sector to the heritage industry, particularly those in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges and Universities. It also seeks to empower stakeholders such as artists, chefs, crafters, and poets by creating opportunities for skills development and career awareness among young people.

The expo activities are carried out through the master champion classes, roundtable discussions, and exhibitions, with the target audience being the TVET students and high school learners from Grade 9-11.

Our Master Class champions this year have been around the provinces sharing their wealth of knowledge in their respective fields.

Our masterclass champions consist of:

Zoe Modiga- Music
Gregory Maqoma – Dance
Napo Masheane – Poetry
Noria Mabasa- Visual Arts
Bongiwe Walaza – Fashion
Apiwe Mawela-Nxusani – Food

Some of the key activities that formed part of the Arts Day included exhibitions by the various institutions, career guidance, motivational talks, a Keynote address by the Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science, and a live visual arts masterclass with legendary sculpturist and ceramicist, Noria Mabasa.

One of our exciting activities was the Makhonjwa Mountain World Heritage site Excursion with learners from Bukhosibetfu Inclusive Primary School on 25 July 2022. Bukhosibetfu Inclusive Primary School caters to both abled and children with special education needs. For this cause, CATHSSETA took a journey with learners with hearing disabilities accompanied by a tour guide from Mpumalanga Tourism Parks Agency and a sign language translator to share information as shared by our tour guide. The purpose of the excursion was to view and learn about the Makhonjwa Mountain World Heritage site and learn about heritage studies and the careers associated with preserving heritage sites such as the Makhonjwa mountain.

The Heritage Careers Expo- Arts Day had great media coverage from SABC news and was also live streaming on YouTube page.
